The story goes like this: James Gunn wanted something for The Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and to go to Fox to trade for it.

The trade was accepted.

And we all benefited from it.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 / Deadpool Trade

The trade was an interesting one.

It involved Brianna Hildebrand’s Negasonic Teenage Warhead character in the Deadpool movie.

Deadpool Negasonic Teenage Warhead

In the comic books, Negasonic Teenage Warhead had psychic abilities, but Deapdool writers wanted the character something more. They wanted the character to have cooler powers; powers that were more fitting to her baddass mutant name.

But before this change could be made, they would need permission from Marvel.

And this is where Marvel seized their opportunity.

In exchange, Marvel wanted Ego “The Living Planet” for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

James Gunn confirmed as much last night on Facebook.

Yes, this is true! When I first pitched Ego as Quill’s father, I THOUGHT we owned the character. After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn’t own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade…

Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Ego the Living Planet

But wait a minute. How the hell was Ego owned by Fox? He’s not a mutant or involved any of the X-Men stories.

After much digging, I found out that despite Ego being originally introduced in the Thor comics in the 60’s, but the planet’s origin’s was linked to Fantastic Four comics from 1981.

It has since been confirmed that Fox do indeed own the rights as a part of their Fantastic Four character ownership.

Interesting how in-depth this Fox/Marvel ownership stuff goes.
